Normal Pulse

Normal Pulse

The normal, healthy pulse is generally found primarily at a medium depth, although it is perceived in all positions (except sometimes at the foot-superficial position).

  • It has Shen: it is rhythmic, calm, neither slow nor rapid. About 70-80 beats per minute. (4-5 beats per breath of the therapist).
  • It has Jing: it has root. It is perceived at the foot and deep position (KI).
  • It has Stomach-Qi: according to Maciocia this is a quality of smoothness.

According to gender

Men and women have different pulses.

Women

It is more Yin, descending. Their vital energy is reflected more in the left hand.

  • The pulse of the left hand will be stronger than in the right hand.
  • The foot pulse is stronger than the inch pulse.

Men

It is more Yang, ascending. Their vital energy is reflected more in the right hand.

  • The pulse of the right hand is stronger than in the left hand.
  • The pulse in the inch position is stronger than in the foot position.

According to the season

Depending on the season of the year, the healthy pulse is different.

  • Spring: Tight pulse (like a violin string). The Yang energy rises but is dominated by Yin which prevents it from rising.
  • Summer: Overflowing pulse (strong, like an ocean wave). Superficial. Yin has disappeared, totally Yang.
  • Autumn: Floating pulse. Yang begins to withdraw and Yin begins to rise.
  • Winter: Deep pulse. All the Yang has withdrawn to the interior.
