Heat and Fire

Heat and Fire

Heat

  • Is Yang.
  • Raises temperature. Fever.
  • Accelerates metabolism.
  • Consumes fluids: abundant sweat, scant urine of strong color and odor, thirst, constipation.
  • Ascends and disperses energy: red and hot face, sweat on the head, agitation of the Shen, talks a lot, insomnia, nervousness.
  • Typical of summer, Fire element.
  • Heat can penetrate the four layers.
  • Sometimes accompanied by dampness.
  • As heat consumes fluids and condenses, it produces Phlegm.
  • Reddens, inflames, Heat Bi.

Examples:

Fire

Is heat taken to the extreme. Intensifies all the above symptoms.

  • Fire accelerates circulation so much that blood exits the blood vessels, causing hemorrhages, epistaxis, bruises, metrorrhagia. Bleeding is what the body does to try to eliminate that excessive heat.
  • Ulcers, sores, boils.
  • Skin infections, redness of the skin, itching.

Long-term exposure to heat consumes fluids and weakens Yin. When Yin cannot control Yang, Yang ascends and violently erupts outward. See for example:
