The Wood element is composed of the Liver (Yin) and the Gall Bladder (Yang).

• Wood is the mother of Fire: The Liver is the mother of the Heart. The Liver stores Blood and Blood maintains the Mind (Heart). If the Liver is weak the Heart will suffer due to Liver-Blood deficiency: The Mother does not nourish the Child. See: Qi Deficiency of Heart and Liver.

• Wood is the grandmother of Earth. The Liver controls the Stomach and the Spleen. The Liver's function of maintaining the free circulation of Qi helps the Stomach to rot and ripen food and the Spleen to transform and transport the nutritive essences of the same.
