Functions of Qi

  • Warm the organism.
  • Defend. See Defensive Qi (Wei Qi).
  • Transform. Blood and Body Fluids.
  • Contain. Urine, sweat, stools, Blood within the blood vessels... When energy is lacking there is leakage, loss and depletion.

Blood comes from food; it is the most nutritive part of grains and water (SP/ST).

  • Nourishes and moistens the organism. Makes bones grow, allows the eyes to see well, keeps the skin nourished and hydrated, and gives strength to the limbs.
  • Warms the organism: this function is shared with Qi.

Xue Disorders

Functions of Body Fluids

  • Nourish the organs, bowels, joints, skin, and Marrow.

Organs involved:

  • Lungs: sweat and mucus.
  • Spleen: saliva.
  • Kidney: thick saliva.
  • Triple Burner is also involved.

Body Fluid Disorders

Body Fluid Deficiency

Dryness of the body, skin and mucous membranes. Dry eyes. Dry stools.

Causes

  • Excessive consumption of fluids: diarrhea, excessive sweating, vomiting.
  • Low production: drinks little, weak SP/ST does not transform correctly.

Stagnation of Fluids

Fluids are not properly eliminated and accumulate. In the form of:

  • Oedema in the limbs.
  • Dampness.
  • Phlegm.
  • Stagnation of fluids is also associated with symptoms such as itching, arthritis, cysts, bronchitis, and allergies.
